Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully launched two U-girders over Halav Bridge on Mumbai Metro Line 2B (D.N. Nagar–Mandale) at 4:00 a.m. on 21 February 2026. The achievement marks a significant step forward in strengthening Mumbai’s metro infrastructure.

Metro Line 2B is a critical East–West corridor connecting key residential and commercial hubs such as D.N. Nagar, BKC, Kurla, Chembur and Mandale. The completion of this technically challenging task reflects steady progress toward delivering a dependable and efficient public transport network for lakhs of daily commuters.
The Halav Bridge stretch required high-precision engineering as it lies within the airport funnel zone, where the vertical clearance between the Metro viaduct and the existing bridge is limited to 3.5 metres. Despite these constraints, the work was executed smoothly after obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals.
To minimise public inconvenience in this busy traffic zone, the operation was undertaken during night hours. This ensured safety, reduced disruption, and facilitated efficient deployment of heavy lifting equipment. Light motor vehicles—including auto-rickshaws, taxis, tempos and ambulances—continue to ply on Halav Bridge, while heavy vehicles have been diverted via alternate routes.
The nearby S.G. Barve Marg Metro Station has been designed as a single-level structure in compliance with aviation height norms. Foundations, pier works for the station, and viaduct sections on both sides of Halav Bridge have already been completed, demonstrating coordinated and timely execution.
The two U-girders (P610–P611 LHS), each 20 metres long, were erected using 500 MT capacity cranes under expert supervision. With this milestone achieved, the project now progresses to track laying, installation of the overhead catenary system, power supply, and telecommunication works.
Parallel area development initiatives are also underway. The proposed widening of A.H. Wadia Road, in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, aims to ease traffic flow and support smoother movement during Ganesh Visarjan and other peak periods. Rehabilitation of affected structures is being carried out in a structured and equitable manner to ensure inclusive growth.
The successful U-girder launching at Halav Bridge underscores meticulous planning and technical excellence. With each completed milestone, Metro Line 2B moves closer to providing faster connectivity, reducing road congestion, cutting travel time, and enhancing the overall quality of urban life in Mumbai.
