Thrissur: A devastating explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Kerala’s Thrissur district has cast a dark shadow over the festive season, leaving multiple people dead and several others injured just days before the iconic Pooram celebrations.

The site, set up in an open paddy field, reportedly housed several temporary sheds storing large quantities of explosives. Around 40 workers were believed to be present when the explosion took place, triggering a chain of blasts that made rescue operations extremely difficult. Thick smoke and repeated explosions forced emergency teams to approach the site with caution.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the tragedy may have begun with a stray spark or an ignited firecracker that set off a stockpile of explosives, leading to a massive fireball that engulfed the area within seconds. The intensity of the blast was such that it was heard kilometres away, sending panic through nearby villages.
Emergency services, including fire and rescue teams, rushed to the scene, battling both flames and the risk of further explosions. Authorities also shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, with several victims suffering severe burn injuries.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan took note of the incident and directed officials to ensure immediate medical care for the injured. A magisterial probe has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to assess whether safety protocols were violated.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about safety standards in fireworks manufacturing, especially during peak festival seasons when production is ramped up. Thrissur Pooram, known for its grand fireworks displays, attracts thousands of spectators every year, making safety compliance critical.
