Tripura Explores Seaplane Tourism to Boost Connectivity and Promote Aquatic Destinations

0

The Tripura state government is actively exploring the introduction of seaplane tourism as part of its strategy to enhance connectivity and attract domestic and international tourists to the northeastern state. This initiative, spearheaded by Tripura Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, aims to tap into the region’s unique water-based tourism sites while strengthening the local economy and fostering sustainable development.

Minister Chowdhury revealed that the government held a virtual meeting with a private airline company that operates seaplanes across various parts of India. He explained that Tripura’s abundant aquatic tourism sites, including Chabimura, Narikel Kunja, and Rudrasagar Lake, could benefit greatly from enhanced accessibility provided by seaplane services. The initiative is expected to make these destinations more accessible to foreign and domestic tourists alike while boosting the state’s visibility as a premier travel destination in India’s northeast.

“Tripura has several water-based tourism places that are immensely popular,” Chowdhury remarked. “The proposed seaplane venture would not only promote tourism but also create economic opportunities and improve connectivity across the state.”

Neermahal, a remarkable water palace located in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, is one of Tripura’s most iconic destinations and could serve as a central attraction for seaplane tourism. Built in 1930 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya as a summer residence, the palace blends Mughal architectural influences and stands as a stunning testimony to Tripura’s royal heritage. Its picturesque location attracts thousands of domestic and foreign tourists annually.

Chabimura, another unique water-based destination, is known for its ancient rock carvings on steep mountain walls along the Gomati River. These panels feature intricate depictions of Hindu deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, Kartika, and Mahisasurmardini Durga, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. This historical and cultural site could gain prominence as part of the seaplane circuit.

Dumboor Lake, located 115 kilometers south of Agartala, also ranks among Tripura’s finest aquatic destinations. This charming lake, formed at the confluence of the Raima and Sarma rivers, offers boating facilities for visitors. One of its islands, Narkel Kunja, has been developed into a thriving tourist spot and is recognized as a prime example of natural beauty meeting sustainable tourism.

Minister Chowdhury emphasized that while the meeting was promising, the government would first conduct feasibility studies to determine the viability of seaplane operations. If found sustainable, the initiative will be jointly managed by the Tourism and Transport departments.

The potential success of this project could also draw inspiration from existing models of seaplane operations in other Indian states, such as the Jal Mahal in Jaipur, Rajasthan, which has gained international acclaim. Tripura’s initiative underscores its vision to build upon local assets, enhance tourist infrastructure, and expand its contributions to India’s tourism sector.

As the government evaluates this pioneering idea, the proposed introduction of seaplane tourism heralds a new era for Tripura, highlighting its ability to innovate and elevate its tourism landscape while preserving the state’s rich heritage and natural treasures.
