Rashtrapati Niketan in Dehradun Opens to Public, Showcases Presidential Heritage and Expansive Ecological Park

0

Rashtrapati Niketan, the Presidential Retreat in Dehradun, will open for public viewing starting June 24, reinforcing efforts to enhance citizen engagement with India’s heritage and the presidency. Situated on a 21-acre estate, this historic structure, previously known as Rashtrapati Ashiana, has been transformed into a public-access site that highlights curated artwork, the legacy of the President’s Bodyguard, and scenic gardens. Visitors will also be able to tour the stables and horses of the President’s Bodyguard, offering insight into traditional cavalry training.

President Droupadi Murmu will visit Rashtrapati Niketan on June 20 to assess preparations for the public opening and will lay the foundation stone for Rashtrapati Udyan, an expansive 132-acre ecological park envisioned as a hub for environmental education, recreation, and biodiversity preservation. The Udyan will feature thematic gardens, a butterfly park, a scenic lake, an aviary, a children’s play area, a sports zone, jogging and cycling tracks, water conservation systems, and outdoor learning spaces, transforming it into a dynamic environmental and educational landmark.

Alongside Rashtrapati Niketan, visitors can explore Rashtrapati Tapovan, a 19-acre dense forest trail on Rajpur Road. This nature retreat offers a canopy of native trees, winding trails, wooden bridges, elevated birdwatching machans, and meditation spaces, providing a tranquil escape with eco-interpretive experiences and guided seasonal trails.

The initiative follows the successful public openings of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad, and Rashtrapati Niwas in Mashobra, which now allow visitors six days a week. Since February, the Change of Guard Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan has been upgraded, featuring increased seating and a new ceremonial format.

With Rashtrapati Niketan’s transformation, the government continues to expand heritage accessibility, allowing citizens to engage with the historical, ecological, and cultural significance of India’s presidential estates.
