The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has launched a high-priority rescue operation after the Liberian container vessel MSC ELSA 3 developed a critical 26-degree list approximately 38 nautical miles southwest of Kochi on May 24, 2025. The vessel, which had departed from Vizhinjam Port on May 23, was en route to Kochi when it issued a distress alert earlier today.
Acting swiftly, the ICG deployed ships and aircraft to the location of the distressed vessel, executing a coordinated rescue operation. Among the 24 crew members onboard, nine have been rescued, and efforts are actively underway to evacuate the remaining 15 crew members.
To support the evacuation mission, the ICG has airdropped additional life-rafts, ensuring that safety measures remain intact during the rescue process. Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Shipping, working in coordination with the ICG, has directed the ship managers to arrange urgent salvage assistance, aiming to stabilize the vessel and prevent further risks.
The operation remains ongoing, with ICG personnel closely monitoring the situation, ensuring the safe evacuation of all remaining crew members. The Indian Coast Guard continues to reinforce its role as a critical maritime rescue force, committed to swift and effective responses in crisis situations on Indian waters.
