Indian Navy to Induct Traditionally Built ‘Ancient Stitched Ship’, Reviving India’s Maritime Heritage

0

The Indian Navy is set to induct and unveil the Ancient Stitched Ship in a ceremonial event at Naval Base Karwar on May 21, 2025. Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will preside as the Chief Guest, formally marking the ship’s entry into naval service.

The vessel is a meticulous recreation of a 5th-century CE ship, inspired by artwork from the Ajanta Caves. The ambitious project, initiated under a tripartite agreement in July 2023 between the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy, and M/s Hodi Innovations, was funded by the Ministry of Culture. The ship’s keel was laid on September 12, 2023, and construction was completed using entirely traditional techniques, led by master shipwright Babu Sankaran and artisans from Kerala.

The unique vessel was launched at M/s Hodi Shipyard, Goa in February 2025. The Indian Navy played a crucial role in overseeing all aspects of the project, from concept development and technical validation to construction, collaborating closely with IIT Madras to conduct hydrodynamic testing and assess the ship’s seaworthiness. Unlike modern naval vessels, the ship features square sails and steering oars, demanding a fresh interdisciplinary approach to design—combining archaeology, naval architecture, and traditional craftsmanship.

Following induction, the project will enter a second phase, where the Indian Navy will sail the vessel along ancient maritime trade routes, reviving traditional Indian seafaring. Preparations are already underway for a maiden transoceanic voyage from Gujarat to Oman.

This initiative not only reaffirms India’s rich shipbuilding traditions but also showcases the Navy’s commitment to preserving and operationalizing India’s maritime heritage. The induction of the Ancient Stitched Ship stands as a testament to India’s enduring legacy in oceanic exploration and traditional craftsmanship.
