0

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda marked World Food Safety Day 2025 with a strong call to action against rising obesity rates, unveiling a nationwide awareness campaign under the Eat Right India program at NIMHANS, Bengaluru. The initiative, themed “Stop Obesity by Eating Safe and Healthy,” aims to educate citizens on the dangers of poor dietary habits and promote balanced nutrition.

Nadda emphasized the urgent need to address obesity, citing the ICMR-India Diabetes (INDIAB) study, which revealed a 39.6% increase in urban obesity and a 23.1% rise in rural areas between 2008 and 2020. He warned that by 2050, one-third of India’s population could be obese, underscoring the importance of preventive health measures.

The campaign includes multilingual outreach, sign language accessibility, and multi-platform media engagement, ensuring widespread participation. Nadda reaffirmed the government’s commitment to food safety, aligning with this year’s theme, “Food Safety: Science in Action.” He urged citizens to reduce oil consumption by 10%, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call for healthier eating habits.

The Eat Right Activity Book, a key resource for schoolchildren, was also launched to promote food safety, hygiene, and nutrition awareness. Developed by leading experts, the book integrates curricular and extracurricular learning, empowering students to become early advocates for healthy eating.

Nadda praised the Sugar and Oil Boards initiative, developed by FSSAI, which visually highlights hidden sugars and fats in everyday foods. These boards, placed in schools, workplaces, and public institutions, serve as powerful advocacy tools, nudging individuals toward healthier choices.

Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava reinforced the importance of early sensitization, urging collaborative action to build a culture of safe food and healthy living. She emphasized that reducing oil consumption is not just a slogan but a necessary step toward eliminating non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The event also featured a video campaign with celebrity chef Ranveer Brar, advocating for reduced oil consumption and healthier food choices. The initiative will leverage FM radio, railway audio announcements, and digital platforms to build a mass movement for better nutrition and public health.

With India facing rising obesity rates, the Eat Right India program aims to transform dietary habits, ensuring a healthier future for millions. The campaign’s inclusive approach and strategic outreach signal a major step toward combating lifestyle diseases and promoting food safety nationwide.
