0

Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated BharatGen, India’s first government-funded multimodal AI Large Language Model at the BharatGen Summit. Developed under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and implemented through TIH Foundation for IoT and IoE at IIT Bombay, BharatGen aims to revolutionize AI development across India’s linguistic and cultural landscape.

The initiative, supported by the Department of Science and Technology, brings together leading academic institutions, experts, and innovators to create ethical, inclusive, multilingual AI deeply rooted in Indian values. BharatGen integrates text, speech, and image modalities, offering AI solutions in 22 Indian languages for healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance.

Singh emphasized BharatGen’s transformative potential, citing AI-powered telemedicine services in remote villages, where an AI doctor communicates fluently in regional languages, improving healthcare accessibility. He described BharatGen as central to India’s Techade, setting a global benchmark for AI-driven governance, including the CPGRAMS grievance redressal system studied internationally.

He reaffirmed the National Research Foundation’s role in accelerating India’s R&D ecosystem, highlighting programs like PM MUDRA Yojana and PM Vishwakarma Yojana, which uplift artisans, vendors, and micro-entrepreneurs. BharatGen’s integration into grassroots governance includes multilingual feedback systems, enhancing citizen engagement and service delivery.

India’s AI leadership extends to Agri-tech innovations, with over 3,000 startups pioneering initiatives such as lavender farming in Jammu & Kashmir. Singh stressed that innovation thrives beyond metro cities, demonstrating AI’s potential in rural development and precision agriculture.

The BharatGen Summit featured a Generative AI Hackathon 2025, fostering student innovation through real-world AI applications. The initiative is deployed through 25 Technology Innovation Hubs, four of which have been upgraded to Technology Translational Research Parks, ensuring entrepreneurship and international collaboration.

Senior government officials and academic leaders, including Abhay Karandikar, V Srinivas, Rajit Punhani, and Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan, participated in discussions, reinforcing BharatGen’s role in advancing India’s AI ecosystem. With its focus on ethical AI, multilingual accessibility, and national integration, BharatGen stands as a landmark initiative in India’s technological growth.
