Defense Minister Rajnath Singh interacted with the women crew members of Navika Sagar Parikrama II (NSP II), Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A of the Indian Navy, through video conferencing on March 7, 2025, on the eve of International Women’s Day. The crew’s sailing vessel, INSV Tarini, is currently in the South Atlantic Ocean, 450 nautical miles from Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, and heading towards Cape Town, South Africa.
Singh commended the crew’s bravery, dedication, and resilience as they undertake the challenging voyage of circumnavigating the globe. He highlighted their achievements, such as crossing Point Nemo, the world’s most isolated waters, and navigating through the Drake Passage, one of the most treacherous water bodies. The journey, Singh noted, stands as a testament to Nari Shakti (women power) and showcases the Indian government’s vision of a gender-inclusive armed force.
He encouraged more young women to pursue careers in defense and adventure sports, emphasizing the invaluable role of women in bolstering national security. The journey of NSP II symbolizes India’s resolve to foster leadership and self-reliance among women. The crew underwent rigorous training in navigation, weather management, and ocean survival techniques before embarking on this prestigious journey, which was flagged off on October 2, 2024, at Goa by the Chief of the Naval Staff.
The Ministry of Defence has been proactive in increasing female representation in the Indian Defence Forces. Significant initiatives include offering permanent commission opportunities, increasing intake in the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA), and assigning leadership roles in combat and aviation branches.
This landmark initiative not only aims to highlight the strength and potential of women but also to inspire future generations to contribute to national defense and adventure sports.
