Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that Bharat will host the prestigious 2029 World Police and Fire Games, a biennial international sporting event featuring personnel from police, fire, disaster response, and emergency services. Expressing his happiness on social media, Shah described the win as a moment of great pride for every Indian and a testament to Bharat’s growing stature in global sports infrastructure under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He also noted that Ahmedabad, the chosen venue for the games, has emerged as a major sporting destination on the world map.

The World Police and Fire Games, held every two years since 1985, bring together serving and retired personnel from across the globe to compete in over 50 sports. Until now, the games have primarily been hosted in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and China. Bharat’s selection marks the first time the event will be held in the country, showcasing its capabilities in organising large-scale international sporting events.

The Indian Police contingent first joined the games in 2007 at Adelaide, and since then has amassed over 1,400 medals across eight editions. In the most recent edition held in Winnipeg, Canada in 2023, 133 Indian participants secured a record haul of 343 medals, including 224 golds. The contingent is selected through annual All India Police Games, which are overseen by the All India Police Sports Control Board, comprising 53 organisations from state and central security forces. Gold medal winners from these national games form the pool for international representation.

Bharat’s successful bid underscores a broader shift in international recognition of its sporting excellence and institutional preparedness. The 2029 Games are expected to further promote sports culture among uniformed services, foster global camaraderie, and showcase Bharat’s organisational capacity on the world stage.
