Mumbai: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), a proud Navratna DPSU, officially launched the production of the first of fourteen Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard on December 19, 2024. The keel laying ceremony for this significant vessel took place on May 27, 2025, presided over by DIG Atul Parlikar, TM, OIC-CGSD(Mbi), alongside Mr. A Vinod, Executive Director (Shipbuilding-MDL), and senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard, as well as representatives from the classification societies ABS and IRS, at the Ritchie Dry Dock of MDL.

MDL has secured a contract with the Indian Coast Guard to design, construct, and deliver a total of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels, with the project valued at ₹1070.47 crores. Each vessel will feature an advanced waterjet propulsion system, engineered to exceed a speed of 33 knots and classified under Dual class (ABS & IRS).
These high-speed vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art waterjet propulsion and high-speed diesel engines, designed primarily for patrolling coastal waters and safeguarding fishing activities. They will also be capable of carrying a small high-speed boat for conducting search and rescue operations in shallow, uncharted areas. Moreover, these vessels possess the inherent capability to transition into wartime roles, including maintaining communication links, escorting coastal convoys, providing logistical support, facilitating medical evacuations, and augmenting resources for the Indian Navy.

The delivery of the vessel is anticipated in March 2026. Today’s keel laying ceremony signifies a vital step forward in the construction journey of this remarkable vessel by MDL.
