Mumbai: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a proud NAVRATNA CPSE, has successfully delivered the second stealth frigate of the Project 17A Class, designated Yard 12652 (UDAYGIRI), to the Indian Navy on July 1, 2025. The acceptance document was officially signed by Capt Jagmohan, Chairman & Managing Director of MDL, and RAdm Ravnish Seth, VSM, CSO (Tech), HQENC, in a ceremony at MDL. The event was attended by various directors from MDL, Cmde Vikas Sood, the Commanding Officer (Designate) of Udaygiri, as well as teams from the Warship Design Bureau, the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), the project team, and personnel from the Navy.

In his address, Capt Jagmohan emphasized, “The delivery of Udaygiri marks a momentous achievement in the journey of Indian shipbuilding and is a source of pride for all of us at MDL. This accomplishment showcases our collective commitment, professionalism, and collaboration among MDL, the Warship Design Bureau, and different branches of the Indian Navy, all of whom have put in relentless effort to bring this sophisticated vessel to fruition.”

He continued, “Udaygiri is not only a state-of-the-art warship, boasting cutting-edge combat capabilities, but it also embodies India’s strength in indigenous defense manufacturing. I am optimistic that she will instill great pride in her Commanding Officer and crew, not just for her impressive performance at sea, but also for the legacy of innovation, resilience, and self-reliance she signifies.”

Udaygiri is the second ship in the Project 17A series and is equipped with advanced technology that places her among the finest in her class globally. Designed indigenously by the Warship Design Bureau in New Delhi, Udaygiri is armed with a comprehensive suite of modern weapons and sensors, providing robust capabilities against enemy submarines, surface warships, anti-ship missiles, and fighter aircraft. She is equipped with guns for close-in defense and effective naval gunfire support.
Udaygiri is designed to operate independently as well as serve as the flagship of a naval task force. With significant indigenous components, she is a prime example of the self-reliance achieved in warship design and shipbuilding, aligning perfectly with the ‘Make in India’ initiative launched by the Government of India.
