Summer Heat Alert: Doctors Advise Hydration, Light Diet And Sun Protection To Stay Safe

Summer Heat Alert: Doctors Advise Hydration, Light Diet And Sun Protection To Stay Safe.

As temperatures continue to rise across several parts of India, health experts are warning people to take extra precautions against heat-related illnesses during the peak summer season.

Doctors say prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and even life-threatening heatstroke, especially among senior citizens, children, outdoor workers and people with existing medical conditions.

According to health specialists, one of the most important precautions during summer is maintaining proper hydration. People are advised to drink sufficient water throughout the day even if they do not feel thirsty. Natural cooling drinks such as coconut water, lemon water, buttermilk and fresh fruit juices can also help maintain electrolyte balance.

Medical experts recommend avoiding direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, particularly between 12 noon and 4 pm, when temperatures are at their highest. Those who need to step outside should wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothing, sunglasses and caps or umbrellas to reduce heat exposure.

Doctors also advise avoiding heavy, oily and spicy foods during extreme heat. Instead, people should include seasonal fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber and oranges in their diet as they contain high water content and essential nutrients.

Health professionals warn that symptoms such as dizziness, excessive sweating, headache, muscle cramps, nausea, rapid heartbeat and fatigue should not be ignored as they may indicate heat exhaustion. Immediate cooling, hydration and medical attention may be required in severe cases.

Children and elderly people are considered particularly vulnerable during heatwaves. Parents are advised to ensure children remain hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Senior citizens should stay indoors in well-ventilated spaces and avoid unnecessary travel during the day.

Fitness experts also recommend modifying workout routines during summer. Outdoor exercise should preferably be done early in the morning or after sunset to avoid heat stress. Overexertion in high temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration and cardiovascular strain.

Dermatologists are also advising people to protect their skin from harmful ultraviolet rays by using sunscreen and avoiding prolonged sun exposure, which can lead to tanning, sunburn and skin damage.

Environmental experts say rising urban temperatures and heatwave conditions are becoming more frequent due to climate change and rapid urbanisation, making public awareness increasingly important.

Hospitals in several cities have already reported an increase in cases related to dehydration and heat fatigue as temperatures continue to soar.

Experts stress that simple preventive measures, timely hydration and awareness can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and help people stay healthy during the harsh summer months.
