Heatwave Conditions Intensify Across India Amid Rising Power Demand

Mumbai: Several parts of India continue to witness intense heatwave conditions as temperatures remain significantly above normal levels in many states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for severe heatwave conditions in regions including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Maharashtra and parts of central India.

India’s Endless Summer: How Heatwaves Are Rewriting Life, Work and Power Consumption.

The rising temperatures have also pushed electricity consumption to record levels across the country. Increased use of air-conditioners, coolers and refrigeration systems has led to a sharp rise in peak power demand during the summer season.

Experts have expressed concern over rising daytime as well as nighttime temperatures, which are impacting public health and increasing discomfort among citizens. Elderly people, children and outdoor workers are considered the most vulnerable during prolonged heat exposure.

The heatwave conditions are also affecting water availability in several urban and rural areas. Demand for water tankers has increased in many cities, while agricultural regions are facing concerns over declining soil moisture and crop stress ahead of the monsoon season.

Climate experts have attributed the worsening heat conditions to factors such as climate change, rapid urbanisation, shrinking green cover and changing weather patterns. Many Indian cities are experiencing higher temperatures due to excessive concrete structures and limited open green spaces.

Authorities in several states have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The IMD has stated that heatwave conditions are likely to continue in several parts of the country over the coming days.
