Amit Shah Unveils Narcotics Control Vision 2026–2029, Calls for Ruthless Crackdown on Drug Traffickers

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday unveiled the ‘Narcotics Control Vision Document 2026–2029’, calling for a technology-driven and intelligence-led crackdown on drug trafficking while stressing that law enforcement agencies must adopt a “ruthless approach” against drug networks.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah addresses the 10th Apex Level Meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) and the release of the Vision Document on Narcotics Control at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Friday, June 26, 2026.

Chairing the 10th apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) in New Delhi, Shah said India’s fight against narcotics requires closer coordination among Central and state agencies, backed by modern technology and network-centric policing.

“Our response must be intelligence-led. We need to adopt a technology-driven approach and fight using a network-centric strategy. We must move forward with a ruthless approach; only then can we achieve victory against this challenge,” the Home Minister said.

However, Shah clarified that the government’s tough approach should be directed at drug traffickers and organised crime syndicates, while young people struggling with substance abuse should receive compassion, treatment and rehabilitation.

“The ruthless approach should only be against drug traffickers. Our approach towards youth addicted to drugs should be one of compassion,” he said.

The Home Minister urged officials to intensify efforts towards the government’s vision of a ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ (Drug-Free India) and called for measurable improvements over the next year to strengthen the implementation of the three-year strategy.

During the meeting, Shah also released the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Annual Report 2025, inaugurated newly constructed NCB zonal offices in Jammu and Guwahati, and launched the Online Drug Disposal Fortnight Campaign.

He commended narcotics enforcement agencies for destroying seized drugs worth ₹12,525 crore in a single day, describing it as a significant step in the country’s fight against drug trafficking.

Prepared after consultations with multiple stakeholders, the Narcotics Control Vision Document 2026–2029 outlines a comprehensive strategy focusing on demand reduction, supply reduction and rehabilitation. It also addresses emerging challenges such as synthetic drugs, darknet-based trafficking and the need for stronger public awareness, treatment facilities and rehabilitation services.

The NCORD meeting, organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Narcotics Control Bureau, brought together representatives from Central ministries, state governments and law enforcement agencies to review and strengthen India’s anti-narcotics strategy.

Why It Matters

India has stepped up efforts to combat drug trafficking through coordinated action between Central and state agencies. The new Vision Document aims to strengthen enforcement against organised drug networks while expanding prevention, awareness and rehabilitation initiatives to address the growing challenge of substance abuse and emerging threats such as synthetic narcotics and darknet-based trafficking.
