Substantial advancement has been done on the Panvel–Karjat New Suburban Railway Corridor, an important project under MUTP–III, aimed at strengthening suburban connectivity on Central Railway.
The project, sanctioned at a cost of ₹2782 crore, has reached more than 80 percent physical progress.
The corridor will provide a dedicated double-line suburban route between Panvel and Karjat, significantly enhancing connectivity for Navi Mumbai, Raigad district, and nearby growth centres. Once commissioned, it is expected to ease pressure on the existing suburban network and reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters.
Land acquisition for the project—including private, government, and forest land—is fully complete.
Major project components have reached advanced stages:
• Civil Works:
Earthwork, major and minor bridges, and tunnels are largely completed. The three tunnels on the alignment have achieved breakthrough and final lining is nearing completion.
Construction of rail flyovers at Panvel and Karjat is progressing well, with most girders launched and deck slab works underway.
• Station Infrastructure:
Station buildings and passenger facilities at Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk, and Karjat are in active completion stages. Several facilities—such as booking offices, circulating areas, staff quarters, foot overbridges, and suburban buildings—have already been commissioned.
• Track, OHE and Utilities:
Track linking has progressed across multiple sections, supported by ballast formation and unloading of rail panels. Ongoing work includes yard remodelling, platform development, and COP foundations.
• Signaling and Telecom:
Electronic interlocking testing at Mohope and Chowk has been successfully completed.
• The Panvel–Karjat suburban corridor is a transformative project for the Mumbai region. Its completion will significantly reduce load on existing routes and provide a modern, efficient suburban link benefiting passengers across Navi Mumbai and Raigad.
