Mumbai is set to witness a major transformation in its suburban rail network with the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) inviting tenders for the supply and 35-year maintenance of 2,856 fully air-conditioned Vande Metro (Suburban) coaches. These rakes, in 12, 15, and 18-car formations, will significantly boost capacity, comfort, and safety for the city’s millions of daily commuters.

The project, floated under MUTP Phase III and IIIA, also includes two new maintenance depots at Bhivpuri (Central Railway) and Vangaon (Western Railway). Bids open on December 8, 2025, and will follow the Make in India policy, ensuring domestic manufacturing and technology integration. The first prototype rake is expected within two years of awarding the contract.
