The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), widely regarded as India’s best-performing port, has cemented its position as the country’s largest container port, marking a historic milestone on its 36th Foundation Day. The celebratory event took place on Monday, May 26, 2025, in the presence of key dignitaries, including Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal.
The gathering featured notable industry leaders and government officials, including Shri Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways; Shri T K Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways; and Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, Chairperson of JNPA.
As part of the event, JNPA unveiled a commemorative coffee table book chronicling its 36-year journey, highlighting its evolution, infrastructural advancements, and sustainability efforts. Additionally, a corporate film showcased JNPA’s transformation and its ambitious roadmap for the future.

A significant highlight of the event was the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) under the Vadhvan Port Skilling Program. The first MoU, between VPPL and Sahyadri Farms, aims to enhance skill development for rural youth and farmers, strengthening the agri-logistics value chain. The second MoU, signed between VPPL and Rural Enhancers Projects Pvt. Ltd., focuses on the development of a terminal at Vadhvan Port, facilitating container, bulk, and liquid cargo operations while promoting digital infrastructure and skill development.
Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal praised JNPA for its pivotal role in national economic development, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a globally competitive maritime sector. He emphasized that India’s rise as a top-five maritime nation is achievable through unity, strategic planning, and innovation.
Shri Shantanu Thakur echoed this sentiment, stating that JNPA’s 10 million TEU capacity showcases India’s strengthening position in the global port sector. Shri T K Ramachandran emphasized JNPA’s alignment with the government’s Amrit Kaal vision, highlighting achievements in digitalization, port-led industrialization, and sustainability.

The celebration also included an award ceremony honoring industry professionals and JNPA employees for their contributions to the port’s success. Among the recipients were Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Pvt. Ltd. (BMCT) for highest container traffic, Maersk Line India Pvt. Ltd. for leading shipping operations, and UltraTech Cement Ltd. for bulk cargo excellence.

Chairperson Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh emphasized JNPA’s commitment to adapting to modern logistics and global trade dynamics. He outlined plans for an advanced port ecosystem, ensuring efficiency and sustainability in India’s maritime sector.
With expansion initiatives, smart port developments, and the construction of the deep-draft Vadhvan Port, JNPA continues to solidify its role as a gateway to global commerce, reinforcing India’s position in the international maritime industry.
JNPA, established in 1989, operates five container terminals and a multi-product SEZ spanning 277 hectares. The port’s newest endeavor, Vadhvan Port, is set to become one of the world’s top 10 ports, incorporating eco-friendly practices from inception.
