India has emerged as a global leader in tackling ocean-related challenges, with the world increasingly looking to the country for solutions on marine conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable ocean governance. Union Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted this shift in perception at the United Nations Ocean Conference, attended by representatives from over 150 countries, including heads of state, senior ministers, eminent scientists, and policymakers.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Singh noted that in the last 11 years, India has transitioned from being viewed as a passive player in global environmental debates to becoming a driving force behind ocean conservation and climate action. He attributed this change to decisive steps taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the stability of governance, which has enabled long-term initiatives such as the Deep Ocean Mission to gain momentum.
India’s commitment to oceanic research and protection has been underscored by Modi’s repeated references to the Deep Ocean Mission in his Independence Day addresses. Singh emphasized that the country has not only recognized the urgency of marine conservation but has also demonstrated leadership in implementing solutions. He pointed out that ocean-related concerns must be addressed collectively, given that nearly 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is occupied by oceans, which transcend political and geographical boundaries.
Outlining the primary challenges, Singh explained that oceanic issues can be categorized into two broad areas: those arising directly from oceanic changes, such as rising sea temperatures and water levels due to global warming, and those caused by pollution, including oil spills and plastic waste. He highlighted India’s proactive measures, such as being among the first nations to implement an official ban on single-use plastics, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
Singh also noted that India’s Deep Ocean Mission is being carried out in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and other leading research and technical institutes. This integrated approach follows the government’s policy of leveraging the collective expertise of the scientific community to achieve the best possible outcomes.
India’s growing influence in ocean governance was evident at the conference, as several countries sought one-on-one meetings with the Indian delegation to discuss collaborative efforts in marine protection, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. The strong interest from global stakeholders underscores India’s rising stature in addressing worldwide environmental concerns and shaping ocean policies.
