Indian Scientists Pioneer Eco-Friendly Nanocups to Combat Advanced Breast Cancer with Heat-Activated Therapy

0

In a groundbreaking leap for cancer treatment, researchers from India have developed a simplified, one-step process to synthesize unique nanostructures—called “nano-cups”—that can selectively destroy advanced breast tumors using heat-based therapy. The innovation offers a safer, more efficient alternative to existing photothermal treatments, potentially transforming oncology care.

Developed by scientists at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) in Mohali, in collaboration with the Advanced Centre for Treatment Research and Education in Cancer and IIT Bombay, the technique uses rhombic dodecahedron-shaped ZIF-8 crystals as templates, along with a mild vitamin C-based etching and gold deposition process. These cup-shaped semi-shells, partly coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG), absorb near-infrared light and convert it into heat for targeted tumor ablation, minimizing harm to surrounding tissues.

Unlike conventional methods that rely on toxic chemicals and high temperatures, the team’s room-temperature approach employs biocompatible materials and avoids hazardous agents like hydrofluoric acid. The resulting nanocups boast enhanced optical properties, aqueous stability, blood compatibility, and long-term cryopreservation.

When tested in preclinical models, the therapy showed remarkable efficacy in eradicating metastatic breast tumors, improving survival rates, and reducing recurrence. Researchers emphasized the potential of this technique to revolutionize advanced cancer therapy, with future applications including drug delivery, biosensing, and hybrid chemo-thermal treatments.

The study was published in Communications Chemistry, a Nature Group journal, and marks a major stride in India’s push toward next-generation, patient-friendly cancer solutions. If you’d like, I can break down how these nano-cups compare with existing photothermal platforms or explore how their unique shape enhances energy absorption—just say the word.
