Indian Coast Guard Ship Vigraha Strengthens Maritime Ties in Indonesia

0

Indian Coast Guard Ship Vigraha is on an operational visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, from December 2 to 5 as part of its overseas deployment to ASEAN countries. The visit features joint training sessions, shipboard drills, tabletop exercises and professional exchanges between the Indian Coast Guard and the Indonesian Coast Guard, underscoring the growing importance of cooperation in maritime safety, security and environmental protection.

The engagements focus on maritime law enforcement, marine pollution response and search and rescue operations, areas where both nations share significant responsibilities due to their large Exclusive Economic Zones and heavy maritime traffic. A Passage Exercise will be conducted to enhance operational cohesion, communication procedures and seamanship coordination.

The visit also includes courtesy calls, ship visits, yoga and sports activities, and exchanges at maritime training establishments, strengthening camaraderie and people-to-people ties. India and Indonesia, both leading maritime democracies, reaffirm their commitment to a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific through cooperative Coast Guard engagement.

The partnership is anchored in a 2020 Memorandum of Understanding between the two services, which institutionalized collaboration in law enforcement, coordinated patrols, search and rescue, marine pollution response, information sharing and capacity building. Since then, the two agencies have sustained regular interaction through high-level visits, bilateral training, coordinated patrols and ASEAN-led initiatives.
The presence of Vigraha in Jakarta highlights India’s continued commitment to cooperative maritime security and readiness to support partners in strengthening capabilities. Following its Jakarta leg, the ship will sail to Port Klang, Malaysia, continuing its deployment to ASEAN countries to enhance regional engagement and contribute to peace, stability and good order at sea across the Indo-Pacific.
