India and France Sign Agreement for 26 Rafale-Marine Aircraft to Strengthen Naval Capabilities

India has formalized a strategic partnership with France by signing an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for the acquisition of 26 Rafale-Marine aircraft for the Indian Navy. The agreement, inked in New Delhi, includes 22 single-seater and four twin-seater aircraft, along with training, simulator, associated equipment, weapons, and performance-based logistics. It also provisions additional equipment for the existing Rafale fleet of the Indian Air Force.

The IGA was signed by the Indian Defence Minister and the French Minister of Armed Forces. Official documents, including the aircraft package supply protocol and weapons package supply protocol, were exchanged in the presence of the Defence Secretary.

In alignment with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the agreement includes Transfer of Technology to integrate indigenous weapons into Rafale aircraft domestically. It also outlines the establishment of production facilities for Rafale fuselages, along with maintenance, repair, and overhaul infrastructure for aircraft engines, sensors, and weapons in India. The initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs and generate substantial revenue for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) involved in production and operations.

Manufactured by Dassault Aviation, the Rafale-Marine aircraft is a carrier-based combat aircraft with proven operational effectiveness in maritime environments. Deliveries of the new aircraft will be completed by 2030, with crew members undergoing training in both France and India.

The procurement of Rafale-Marine aircraft will significantly boost joint operational capabilities between the Indian Navy and Air Force, optimizing training and logistical efficiency. The induction of these aircraft is expected to serve as a potent force multiplier for India’s aircraft carriers, reinforcing the country’s strategic air power at sea.
