India marked another stride toward naval self-reliance with the ceremonial launch of the Fast Patrol Vessel Achal, the fifth in a series of eight being built by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) for the Indian Coast Guard. The vessel was launched on June 16, 2025, in Goa by Kavita Harbola, with Additional Director General Anil Kumar Harbola in attendance.
Constructed under dual certification from the American Bureau of Shipping and Indian Register of Shipping, Achal reflects India’s increasing indigenization efforts, featuring more than 60% locally sourced components. Measuring 52 meters in length with a displacement of 320 tons, the ship is propelled by a controllable-pitch propeller system that allows it to reach speeds of up to 27 knots.
Primed for roles in maritime protection, surveillance, and safeguarding offshore infrastructure, the launch of Achal underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s deepening partnership with GSL and supports the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defense. The project, valued at approximately $56.5 million, has generated employment and provided a substantial boost to India’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) sector through its domestic supply chain network.
Senior officials from the Indian Navy, GSL leadership including Chairman and Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, and representatives from multiple defense and maritime agencies attended the ceremony, highlighting the vessel’s strategic and economic significance. As India invests in maritime security to match regional demands, Achal stands as a symbol of homegrown technological progress and enhanced coastal defense capabilities.
