In a landmark effort to catalyze international cooperation and attract global investments, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) organized a high-profile Ambassadors’ Meet in New Delhi on April 15, 2025. The event drew participation from ambassadors, high commissioners, and senior diplomatic representatives of over 80 countries, aiming to showcase the expansive opportunities offered by India’s vibrant and strategically positioned North Eastern Region (NER).
Hon’ble Minister of Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the immense economic, geopolitical, and cultural importance of the eight states comprising the North Eastern Region: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. With a strategic location bordering Southeast Asia, the region serves as a gateway for strengthening India’s Act East Policy and facilitating economic growth through enhanced connectivity, trade, and innovation. Scindia highlighted the government’s commitment to transforming the North Eastern Region into a hub of industrial development, stressing the distinct resources, crafts, and cultural heritage each state contributes to India’s growth trajectory. He extended an invitation to international partners to explore untapped opportunities in the region’s vast resource base and craftsmanship.
In his remarks, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Hon’ble Minister of State for MDoNER, shared the Prime Minister’s vision for establishing the North Eastern Region as a key economic engine within the framework of a “Viksit Bharat.” He outlined recent infrastructure advancements under the leadership of the Prime Minister, including expansive developments in air, road, and rail connectivity as well as waterways. The Minister underscored the North Eastern Region’s designation as “Ashtalakshmi,” symbolizing prosperity and industrialization potential. With thriving opportunities in diverse sectors, he assured global investors of a welcoming environment for partnership and collaboration.
Shri Pema Khandu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, articulated the distinctive strengths and resources of his state, emphasizing its role in contributing to the collective growth of the North Eastern Region. Adding to the discourse, Shri S. Jaishankar, Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs, shared his insights in a video message, elaborating on the region’s strategic importance in India’s development policies. He highlighted key projects such as the Kaladan multi-modal transit initiative and NER’s potential as a gateway to Southeast Asian markets.
A detailed presentation by Secretary MDoNER, Shri Chanchal Kumar, outlined the diverse investment opportunities available across sectors including information technology, healthcare, agriculture and allied industries, education and skill development, tourism, logistics, textiles, energy, and sports and entertainment. Kumar emphasized the region’s untapped potential and reiterated MDoNER’s commitment to collaborating with diplomatic missions and global investors to channel resources toward projects fostering employment, infrastructure growth, and skill development.
Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, Shri Periasamy Kumaran, added further perspective by underlining the North Eastern Region’s strategic location bordering Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Nepal, and Myanmar. He described the region as a treasure trove of cultures, traditions, and natural beauty, while positioning it as an essential base for India’s expanding economic ties with ASEAN countries and neighboring nations. Kumaran stressed the significance of the Ambassadors’ Meet as a platform for productive dialogue, partnership-building, and investment attraction, ensuring inclusive growth and prosperity.
The event served as a precursor to the upcoming North East Investors Summit, scheduled to be hosted by MDoNER on May 23 and 24, 2025. The overwhelming response from ambassadors and diplomatic envoys reinforced the region’s potential as an investment destination, laying the groundwork for future collaborations in sustainable development and economic expansion. Senior officials from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and the state governments of NER also attended the meet, further enriching discussions and commitments toward progress.
The Ambassadors’ Meet emerged as a pivotal moment in strengthening India’s international partnerships and advancing the North Eastern Region as a dynamic contributor to global economic landscapes.
