AI and Advanced Technologies Take Center Stage in India’s Defence Strategy: Gen Chauhan

0

India’s defence preparedness is entering a transformative phase as Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technologies in modern warfare. Speaking at the East Tech Symposium 2025 held at the Khelgaon complex in Ranchi, General Chauhan stated that future wars will not be confined to conventional battlefields but will extend into cyber and space domains, demanding a new level of strategic foresight and technological innovation.
He stressed the need to strengthen the foundation of defence manufacturing in light of rapidly evolving technologies. AI and other innovations, he said, will be decisive in shaping the outcomes of future conflicts. The selection and deployment of weapons must be guided by strategic thinking, and research and development must align with shifting geopolitical and technological landscapes.
Acknowledging that India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing began late, General Chauhan noted that the country is now taking systematic and determined steps to build indigenous capabilities. He highlighted the government’s efforts to counter emerging challenges, particularly in cyber and space warfare, and linked technological advancement to national policy objectives under the Act East Policy. He called on eastern states like Jharkhand and West Bengal to actively contribute to building a robust defence ecosystem.
Describing warfare as both a science and an art, General Chauhan said that today’s warriors must be creative and innovative. He urged defence experts, technologists, and entrepreneurs to prioritize innovation so that India can become self-reliant and emerge as a global competitor in defence technology.
The three-day East Tech Symposium was jointly inaugurated by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The Chief Minister highlighted Jharkhand’s mineral wealth, including uranium, and its potential to contribute significantly to defence and nuclear development. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth also attended the event as a special guest.
This marks the fourth edition of the East Tech Symposium organized by the Army’s Eastern Command, following previous editions in Kolkata and Guwahati. The symposium aims to foster collaboration between the armed forces, defence industry, startups, and academia, reinforcing India’s commitment to innovation and strategic preparedness in an increasingly complex global security environment.
