Held at Mumbai’s Ravindra Natya Mandir following the inaugural ceremony, the opening screenings reflected the festival’s commitment to presenting thought-provoking stories that explore pressing global issues, human emotions and the future of technology.

Exploring Climate Change Through ‘Time and Water’

The festival opened with Time and Water, a visually compelling documentary directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sara Dosa. Set against Iceland’s rapidly changing landscapes, the film follows celebrated writer Andri Snær Magnason as he reflects on the disappearance of glaciers and the fragility of memory.

Blending personal stories with environmental realities, the documentary presents a moving exploration of climate change, family history and humanity’s responsibility towards future generations. The film offers audiences a poetic and deeply emotional perspective on the passage of time and the impact of ecological transformation.

Filipino Short Film Captures Human Longing

The second opening-day feature, AGAPITO, directed by Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Romero, transports viewers to a fading bowling alley where a manager named Mira patiently awaits the arrival of a visitor.

Through subtle storytelling and understated performances, the Filipino short film examines themes of anticipation, loneliness and emotional connection. The narrative demonstrates how everyday spaces can become powerful settings for stories about hope, memory and human relationships.

Animation Meets Artificial Intelligence

Adding a contrasting tone to the opening lineup was the Canadian animated short Good Luck to You All, directed by acclaimed animator Cordell Barker.

The film follows a young girl immersed in imaginative play while raising deeper questions about artificial intelligence, technological advancement and the future of humanity. Combining humour, creativity and philosophical reflection, the animation encourages audiences to consider the opportunities and uncertainties that accompany rapid technological progress.

Global Cinema Takes Centre Stage

The diverse themes presented in the opening films highlighted MIFF’s global outlook and its role as a platform for meaningful storytelling. From environmental concerns and personal memories to human emotions and technological dilemmas, the films collectively established an engaging and thought-provoking tone for the festival.

Recognised as South Asia’s oldest and largest festival dedicated to non-feature cinema, MIFF has been a significant platform for documentary, short fiction and animation filmmakers since its inception in 1990. Organised under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, the festival continues to attract filmmakers, industry professionals and cinema enthusiasts from around the world.

MIFF 2026 Promises Rich Cinematic Experience

This year’s festival has received an impressive 1,459 film entries from 47 countries, reflecting its growing international stature. The selected films represent more than 42 Indian languages and over 30 international languages, showcasing the diversity of contemporary filmmaking.

In addition to film screenings, MIFF 2026 will feature the second edition of Doc Bazaar, masterclasses by industry experts and interactive forums aimed at fostering creative exchange and collaboration among filmmakers.

As Mumbai hosts this global celebration of visual storytelling, MIFF 2026 promises to offer audiences a unique opportunity to experience some of the finest documentaries, short fiction films, animations, student films and debut works from across the world. www.forevernews.in – News that Matters
