Virar–Dahanu Quadrupling Project Reaches 64% Progress, 15-Car EMU Services Begin

Mumbai: The ambitious Virar–Dahanu Road Quadrupling Project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-III (MUTP-III) has achieved 64% physical progress, marking significant advancement in the expansion of rail infrastructure along Mumbai’s rapidly developing northern corridor.
MRVC Sanctioned at a cost of ₹3,578 crore, the project is being implemented by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) to augment railway capacity and strengthen suburban connectivity between Virar and Dahanu Road.
Major civil works completed
Construction activity has accelerated across the corridor, with approximately 30.35 lakh cubic metres of earthwork and 2.48 lakh cubic metres of blanketing completed so far. The project has also recorded substantial progress in bridge and drainage works.
As of July 2026, 4 Road Under Bridges (RUBs), 1 Road Over Bridge (ROB), 13 major bridges and 54 minor bridges have been completed. Around 34.7 km of drainage works have also been executed.
Earthwork under the two major earthwork and bridge packages has reached 98% completion, while 72 bridges/RUBs under these packages have been completed.
Important Bridge Nos. 92 and 93 are also progressing rapidly. At Bridge No. 92, the complete substructure comprising 576 piles, 68 pile caps and 68 piers has been completed. The entire superstructure, including 264 girders and 132 deck slabs, has also been completed.
At Bridge No. 93, 476 piles have been completed, with superstructure construction currently underway. The ROB at LC-55A was completed in July 2026, adding another milestone to the project.
Virar station gets major capacity boost
Virar station is undergoing extensive remodelling and capacity enhancement. Construction of the new station building and elevated deck is progressing, with 36 columns erected, 160 girders launched and nearly 2,000 sq. metres of deck slab cast.
A significant passenger-focused milestone has already been achieved with the widening of Platforms 3A and 4A from 6.5 metres to 10 metres and their extension by 60 metres to accommodate 15-car suburban trains.
The upgraded platforms have been completed and 15-car EMU services between Virar and Dahanu Road have commenced.
Platform 5B and the FOB between Virar and Vaitarna (Narangi Gate) have also been completed and commissioned.
Work progresses across the corridor
Infrastructure works are simultaneously advancing at Vaitarna, Saphale, Kelve Road, Palghar, Umroli, Boisar, Vangaon and Dahanu Road.
Several station and service buildings, staff quarters, signalling facilities, foot-over-bridge components and utility structures have either been completed or handed over. Work on platforms, FOBs, circulating areas and other associated infrastructure is continuing.
Strengthening Mumbai’s northern rail corridor
The quadrupling project will add two additional railway lines between Virar and Dahanu Road, substantially increasing the capacity of the existing corridor.
The additional infrastructure is expected to support enhanced suburban train operations and meet the growing mobility requirements of the rapidly urbanising northern part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
With physical progress touching 64%, work is now advancing simultaneously across bridges, stations, earthwork, drainage and other railway infrastructure, bringing the project closer to delivering a significant capacity enhancement for commuters in the region.
