MRVC Commissions New Elevated Deck and South-End Foot Over Bridge at Ghatkopar Station, Boosting Passenger Connectivity

Mumbai, July 24: In a major step towards improving commuter convenience and easing congestion at one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban railway hubs, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Limited (MRVC) has commissioned a new elevated deck and a 12-metre-wide South-end Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Ghatkopar Railway Station as part of its ongoing Station Improvement Project.

The newly operational passenger facilities are expected to significantly enhance the movement of thousands of daily commuters by providing seamless connectivity between the Mumbai Suburban Railway network and the Metro station, while reducing crowding during peak hours.

The project includes a 55-metre-long elevated deck, which serves as a vital passenger circulation corridor connecting the existing Metro Foot Over Bridge with the newly constructed South-end FOB. The deck varies in width from 4 metres to 7.5 metres, ensuring smooth passenger dispersal across different sections of the station.

A 6.10-metre-wide staircase has also been provided, offering direct access to the Metro station building and making transfers between suburban rail and Metro services faster, safer and more convenient.

The newly commissioned 12-metre-wide South-end Foot Over Bridge, spanning approximately 65 metres, has been designed to improve access to railway platforms while substantially increasing the station’s passenger handling capacity.

Phase-I Facilities Opened

Considering the complexity of carrying out construction without disrupting Mumbai’s busy suburban rail services, the project is being commissioned in phases.

Under Phase-I, commuters can now use:

• Staircase connecting Platform 1.
• Double-discharge landings serving Platforms 2/3 and Platform 4.
• Newly commissioned elevated deck linking the South-end FOB with the existing Metro FOB.
• Direct connectivity to the existing eastern skywalk.

These additions are expected to provide immediate relief by creating additional circulation space and improving passenger movement between railway platforms, Metro services and the eastern side of the station.

Modern Passenger Amenities Planned

Once the remaining work is completed, the South-end FOB will feature additional main staircases connecting Platforms 2/3, Platform 4 and the eastern side of the station.

The completed facility will also include:

• Six escalators, including two on Platform 1, one each on Platforms 2/3 and Platform 4, and two on the eastern side.
• Four lifts providing barrier-free access for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and passengers carrying luggage.
• CCTV surveillance across the facility.
• Modern passenger announcement systems.
• Advanced passenger information displays and directional signage.

The passenger circulation and way-finding system has been designed based on recommendations from IIT Roorkee, ensuring efficient crowd management and improved commuter experience.

MRVC Reaffirms Commitment

Speaking on the occasion, Vilas S. Wadekar, Chairman and Managing Director, MRVC, said the project represents another important milestone in modernising Mumbai’s suburban railway infrastructure.

He said the integrated passenger facilities would significantly improve station circulation, strengthen Metro-rail connectivity and provide much-needed relief from congestion while reflecting MRVC’s commitment to delivering safe, accessible and commuter-centric infrastructure with minimal disruption to train operations.

The Ghatkopar Station Improvement Project forms part of MRVC’s broader initiative to upgrade Mumbai’s suburban railway infrastructure, improve multimodal integration and provide world-class facilities to millions of daily commuters.
