Monday Market Update
Indian equities open subdued as oil, geopolitics and rupee pressure weigh on sentiment
Forever News
Mumbai, August 17, 2026: Indian equity markets began the new trading week on a cautious note, with the Sensex and Nifty opening lower amid weak global cues, elevated crude oil prices and continuing geopolitical uncertainty.
The Nifty 50 slipped 0.09% to 24,343.45, while the BSE Sensex declined 0.15% to 77,892.92 in early trading. Nine of the 16 major sectoral indices were in the red, while mid-cap and small-cap stocks remained relatively steady.

Indian equities open subdued as oil, geopolitics and rupee pressure weigh on sentiment.
Global cues remain mixed
Asian markets were largely subdued after US equities ended lower on Friday. Investors are assessing weaker US retail-sales data alongside developments in the Middle East, with the ongoing Iran conflict keeping risk appetite under pressure.
The immediate concern for Indian equities is the impact of higher crude prices. Brent crude was trading around $89 a barrel, adding pressure to India’s import bill and raising concerns about inflation and corporate margins.
Rupee under pressure
The Indian rupee is another key market focus. The currency is expected to open weaker around ₹95.60–₹95.64 against the US dollar, compared with Friday’s close of ₹95.4250.
The RBI has been active in the foreign-exchange market to contain excessive volatility. India’s foreign-exchange reserves have climbed to around $707 billion, providing the central bank with a substantial buffer.
The RBI has also shortened the deadline for banks to access its discounted forex swap facility for FCNR(B) deposits, following strong inflows exceeding $50 billion.
Gold gains as investors seek safety
Gold prices moved higher on Monday as a softer US dollar and changing expectations around US monetary policy supported demand for the precious metal.
Spot gold rose around 0.4% to $4,391 an ounce, while silver gained about 1.4%. Investors are increasingly watching US economic data and the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook for direction.
Stocks to watch
Several companies are likely to remain in focus during Monday’s session, including PB Fintech, Juniper Green Energy, CESC, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Texmaco Rail, Voltas, PhysicsWallah, Rubicon Research and GMR Airports.
The ₹2,600-crore Horizon Industrial Parks IPO also opens for subscription today and will remain open until August 19, with a price band of ₹57–₹60 per share.
Market outlook
For investors, the week’s key triggers are likely to be crude oil prices, the rupee-dollar movement, developments in the Middle East, global equity trends and expectations surrounding US interest rates.
With the Nifty still around the 24,300–24,400 zone, traders are likely to remain selective rather than aggressively chase gains. A sustained rise in crude oil could create additional pressure on oil-importing sectors and the rupee, while easing geopolitical tensions could quickly improve market sentiment.
Forever News Market View:
The Indian market enters the week with a cautious-to-negative near-term bias. Investors may prefer quality companies with strong balance sheets and earnings visibility while maintaining discipline amid elevated global uncertainty. Volatility could remain high as currency and crude prices dictate the direction of the market.
