Adani Green Becomes India’s First Renewable Energy Company to Cross 20 GW Operational Capacity

Ahmedabad, July 1 (Forever News): In a significant milestone for India’s clean energy journey, Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has become the country’s first renewable energy company to surpass 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational renewable energy capacity, achieved largely through greenfield projects.

Adani Green Becomes India’s First Renewable Energy Company to Cross 20 GW Operational Capacity.

The achievement marks a major step in India’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy, with AGEL now generating over 52 billion units of green electricity annually—enough to account for nearly 3 per cent of the country’s total electricity consumption.

Commenting on the milestone, Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, said the company’s growth reflects disciplined execution and a long-term commitment to supporting India’s energy security and decarbonisation goals.

“Surpassing 20 GW demonstrates what disciplined execution and long-term vision can achieve. Today, AGEL delivers renewable electricity almost equivalent to the annual power requirement of Mumbai and New Delhi combined, reinforcing the country’s energy security while accelerating its clean energy transition,” he said.

The milestone comes just a decade after the company commissioned its first renewable energy project at Kamuthi in Tamil Nadu in 2016. Since then, AGEL has emerged as India’s largest greenfield renewable energy developer, recording one of the fastest capacity expansion journeys in the sector.

During FY2025-26, the company added 5,051 MW of renewable energy capacity—the highest annual renewable capacity addition by any company outside China.

AGEL’s operational portfolio currently comprises approximately:

  • 14.2 GW of solar power
  • 2.7 GW of wind energy
  • 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid projects

The company has also commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), making it the largest battery storage deployment outside China and one of the fastest executed globally.

With renewable energy contributing an increasing share of India’s electricity mix, battery storage is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring round-the-clock clean power supply.

Looking ahead, AGEL plans to add 10 GWh of battery storage during FY2026-27 and expand its storage portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years, supporting its ambitious target of achieving 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The company’s next phase of expansion is centred around its flagship renewable energy project at Khavda in Gujarat’s Kutch district, which is being developed as the world’s largest renewable energy park.

Industry experts view AGEL’s latest milestone as another indicator of India’s rapid progress towards its clean energy ambitions, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets.
