MRVC Commissions Advanced Electronic Interlocking and Automatic Signalling System at Vangaon

New signalling infrastructure marks a key milestone in the Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project under MUTP-III, enhancing operational efficiency and reliability

Mumbai: Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) has successfully commissioned an advanced Electronic Interlocking (EI) system at Vangaon station, featuring Multi-Section Digital Axle Counter (MSDAC)-based continuous track detection, as part of the Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-III).

The commissioning was completed on October 11 during a sanctioned seven-hour non-interlocking block from 8:05 am to 3:05 pm. All major works were completed by 2:40 pm, ahead of schedule, reflecting effective planning, coordination and execution by the teams involved.

At Vangaon station, the new Electronic Interlocking system has been commissioned to strengthen signalling reliability and improve the management of train movements. The work covered 11 signals, 14 points and 30 track sections, with 36 new routes added to the 25 existing routes. The installation also includes an advanced Multi-Section Digital Axle Counter system developed by Frauscher Sensor Technology, incorporating 60 detection points, along with associated signalling and telecommunications infrastructure.

As part of the wider signalling works in the Boisar–Vangaon automatic signalling section, new Electronic Interlocking equipment has also been commissioned at Relay Huts Nos. 7 and 8. These installations cover 11 signals and 22 track sections with dual detection, along with 10 routes using modern signalling technology. The works also include Frauscher’s FAdAC-based track detection system.

The new arrangement incorporates a centralised architecture and modern electronic interlocking technology, enabling more efficient management of signalling functions and supporting the reliable movement of trains along this section of the railway network.

Commenting on the achievement, Shri Vilas Wadekar, Chairman and Managing Director of MRVC, said the successful commissioning of Phase I marked an important milestone in the Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project under MUTP-III. The commissioning will enable the corporation to take up yard formation and other works at Vangaon station and yard as part of the quadrupling initiative.

The Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project is part of broader efforts to expand railway capacity and modernise Mumbai’s suburban rail infrastructure. By strengthening signalling systems and supporting infrastructure expansion, the project aims to improve operational efficiency and facilitate better passenger services across the Mumbai suburban network.
