Mumbai’s Monsoon Stands Apart: City Receives Nearly a Metre of Rain in July, Among the Wettest Global Metropolises

Mumbai, July 7: As relentless monsoon showers continue to lash Mumbai, renewed attention has turned to just how extraordinary the city’s rainfall is compared to other major metropolitan centres around the world.

Mumbai’s Monsoon Stands Apart: City Receives Nearly a Metre of Rain in July, Among the Wettest Global Metropolises.

A comparative rainfall chart that has gained traction on social media this week highlights Mumbai as one of the wettest major cities globally during its rainiest month. According to the chart, Mumbai receives around 920 mm of rainfall in July, significantly higher than many other global cities known for heavy monsoons, including Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, Lagos and Seoul.

The discussion has gained momentum after Mumbai recorded an exceptionally intense spell of rain over the past few days. Large parts of the city witnessed heavy downpours, resulting in waterlogging, disruption to suburban rail services, flight delays and the closure of schools and colleges as authorities issued weather alerts.

What makes this year’s monsoon particularly remarkable is the pace at which the rain has fallen. Weather observers noted that Mumbai received rainfall close to its average July levels within just the first few days of the month, underlining the intensity of the ongoing monsoon system.

Despite the annual challenges posed by flooding and traffic disruptions, Mumbai’s geography plays a crucial role in shaping its climate. Nestled along the Arabian Sea and influenced by the Western Ghats, the city experiences one of the most vigorous southwest monsoon seasons in the world.

Meteorologists have pointed out that while many global cities receive substantial annual rainfall, Mumbai often records extremely high precipitation over a relatively short period, making its monsoon among the most intense in terms of rainfall concentration.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy rain for Mumbai and adjoining areas, with civic authorities urging residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel and follow official advisories.

While the viral comparison has sparked widespread discussion online, experts note that rainfall data can vary depending on the source, observation period and weather station used. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that Mumbai remains one of the world’s most rain-soaked metropolitan regions during the peak monsoon season.
