Mumbai rains: Orange Alert in force, schools shut; transport hit as city records 380 mm rain in 48 hours

Mumbai, July 7 (www.forevernews.in): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai and its suburbs, forecasting another day of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, lightning and thunderstorms. The financial capital continues to reel under one of the heaviest monsoon spells of the season after receiving up to 380 mm of rainfall in the last 48 hours.

As a precautionary measure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all government, private and municipal schools and colleges across Mumbai on Tuesday. The civic body has also appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors unless absolutely essential.

According to BMC data, Mumbai city recorded nearly 300 mm of rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs received 380 mm and 345 mm, respectively. Strong winds of 70-80 kmph uprooted trees and damaged hoardings at several locations.

The Maharashtra government has advised private establishments to allow employees to work from home wherever feasible, while disaster response teams remain on high alert.

The relentless rainfall has caused widespread waterlogging, severely impacting road traffic, suburban railway services and air travel. Local train services on the Central, Harbour and parts of the Western Railway network have witnessed delays and cancellations due to waterlogged tracks, while airlines have advised passengers to check the latest flight status before leaving for the airport.

The BMC’s Disaster Management Control Room is monitoring the situation round the clock. High-capacity dewatering pumps, suction machines and emergency personnel have been deployed at flood-prone locations, while rescue teams remain on standby to respond to incidents involving fallen trees, electrical hazards and building collapses.

Meanwhile, road and rail connectivity between Mumbai and Pune has also been affected following landslides in the ghat section, leading to cancellations and diversions of several long-distance trains. Authorities have advised commuters to avoid non-essential inter-city travel until weather conditions improve.

The BMC has convened a special general body meeting on July 9 to review the city’s monsoon preparedness and discuss the civic response to the ongoing rain-related emergencies.
