Virar Station Upgrade Boosts Western Railway Capacity; 15-Coach Train Operations Soon

Mumbai: Significant progress has been achieved under the Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project, with major capacity augmentation works completed at Virar station, one of the busiest suburban hubs on the Western Railway network.
As part of the upgrade, Platforms 3A and 4A at Virar station have been widened from 6.50 metres to 10.50 metres and extended to accommodate 15-coach suburban trains, replacing the earlier capacity for 12-coach rakes. The expansion is expected to substantially enhance passenger handling capacity and ease congestion during peak hours.
In addition, a new home platform, Platform No. 5A, has been constructed on the western side of the station. This new platform is aimed at improving operational flexibility and enabling smoother train movements in the high-density suburban section between Virar and Churchgate.
The project has been executed in a record time of just four months, despite the challenges of working within an operational station handling heavy suburban traffic. Railway officials highlighted that the work was carried out with meticulous planning to ensure minimal disruption to daily commuters.
A trial run of an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train was successfully conducted on the upgraded infrastructure by Western Railway in coordination with the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). Following the successful trial, the upgraded platforms are expected to be handed over shortly to Western Railway for the commencement of 15-coach suburban services.

Officials said that the introduction of longer trains will significantly increase the carrying capacity on the Western suburban corridor, which is among the busiest rail networks in the world. The move is expected to benefit lakhs of daily commuters travelling from Virar, Nalasopara, and surrounding areas into Mumbai.
The Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project is a key infrastructure initiative aimed at decongesting the existing railway lines and improving both suburban and long-distance train operations. Once completed, the project will provide additional tracks, enabling better segregation of fast and slow services and improving overall punctuality.
Commenting on the development, MRVC CMD Vilas S. Wadekar said, “The augmentation works at Virar station mark an important step towards enhancing capacity on this crucial section. MRVC continues to execute such projects in close coordination with Western Railway, ensuring safety and minimal disruption to suburban train operations.”
Railway authorities believe that these upgrades will not only improve commuter convenience but also support the growing demand for suburban rail services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With passenger volumes steadily increasing, infrastructure enhancements such as platform expansion and longer train operations are seen as critical to sustaining efficient urban mobility.
