Mauritius Eyes Stronger Trade Ties with India in Manufacturing, AI and Services

Mumbai: Mauritius is seeking to strengthen its economic partnership with India by expanding cooperation in key sectors such as manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI) and services.

H.E. Mrs. Sheilabai Bappoo, High Commissioner of Mauritius to India, said the island nation is keen to attract greater investments from Indian companies and enhance bilateral trade and investment ties. She was speaking during an interaction organised by the World Trade Center Mumbai in collaboration with the All India Association of Industries to explore new opportunities for economic engagement between the two countries.

Mrs. Bappoo noted that Mauritius offers a secure, treaty-compliant and investor-friendly environment for businesses looking to expand globally. The country has strong trade and investment agreements with major economies including the European Union, the United Kingdom, China, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, enabling companies operating from Mauritius to access several international markets.

She also highlighted Mauritius’ strategic position as a gateway for Indian businesses seeking to expand into African markets. At the same time, Mauritian enterprises are keen to participate more actively in India’s rapidly growing economy. Pharmaceuticals, logistics and shipping were identified as sectors with strong potential for collaboration.

Dr. Vijay Kalantri, Chairman of World Trade Center Mumbai and President of the All India Association of Industries, said India and Mauritius share a long-standing economic relationship. Bilateral trade between the two countries currently stands at around USD 800 million and has the potential to double in the next five years with stronger business linkages and sectoral cooperation.

He added that Mauritius is increasingly focusing on future-oriented sectors such as artificial intelligence, information technology, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals and tourism, creating new opportunities for collaboration between Indian and Mauritian businesses.

The interaction reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to further strengthen India–Mauritius economic cooperation and encourage greater engagement between businesses and investors from the two countries.
