Kalyan Kumar Takes Charge as MD & CEO of Central Bank of India

Mumbai: Kalyan Kumar has assumed office as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of the Central Bank of India. He succeeds M V Rao, who retired on July 31, 2025, upon superannuation.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Kumar’s appointment on September 29, 2025. He will serve as MD & CEO for a tenure of three years from the date of taking charge.

Before this appointment, Kumar was Executive Director at Punjab National Bank (PNB) since October 2021. At PNB, he played a key role in driving digital transformation, strategic management, data analytics, and IT excellence. He also spearheaded sustainability initiatives under the ‘PNB Palaash’ programme and led HR transformation through the ‘PNB Udaan’ initiative.

Beginning his career in 1995 as a Rural Development Officer at Union Bank of India, Kumar has nearly three decades of banking experience across diverse domains including branch operations, credit review, human resources, vigilance, business process transformation, and corporate leadership roles. He also contributed significantly to the amalgamation of Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank with Union Bank of India.

A Postgraduate from Rajendra Prasad Agriculture University, Pusa, Kumar is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB) and holds professional certifications in trade finance, SME finance, IT security, and KYC-AML. He has also undertaken leadership programmes under the Banks Board Bureau and at Harvard University.

With this new leadership role, Kumar is expected to steer the Central Bank of India through the next phase of growth, focusing on digital innovation, business transformation, and strengthening customer experience.
