India is intensifying its efforts to strengthen global ocean cooperation, as Union Minister of Earth Sciences Dr. Jitendra Singh led discussions at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France. The high-level gathering, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, has drawn ministers, scientists, and civil society leaders from over 150 countries to accelerate progress on Sustainable Development Goal 14, focused on ocean conservation and sustainability.
Dr. Singh held a bilateral meeting with Vidar Helgesen, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, where he reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing global ocean observation capabilities. India’s contributions will leverage satellite-based technologies and in-situ observation systems, strengthening climate monitoring and monsoon forecasting.
Emphasizing India’s dedication to marine science and equitable access to ocean data, Dr. Singh outlined how improved ocean observation infrastructure is critical for both climate resilience and unlocking the economic potential of the blue economy. Helgesen welcomed India’s increasing role in global coordination mechanisms, encouraging stronger contributions in data sharing, ocean services, and regional observation efforts.
India’s presence at UNOC3 comes at a time when coastal states are recognizing the strategic and economic value of oceans, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. With its extensive coastline and dependence on the monsoon cycle, India is positioning itself as a key player in marine sustainability and ocean governance.
Throughout the week, Dr. Singh is set to participate in multilateral engagements, underscoring India’s priorities in capacity building, scientific advancements, and sustainable ocean management. India’s proactive approach to marine conservation, climate adaptation, and pollution mitigation continues to shape the global dialogue, as nations look to the country for leadership in tackling ocean-related challenges.
