The Unique Identification Authority of India, in collaboration with the Department of School Education and Literacy, has initiated a nationwide campaign to complete Mandatory Biometric Updates for Aadhaar among children aged 5 to 15 years. The initiative integrates biometric update status into the Unified District Information System for Education Plus platform, enabling schools to identify students with pending updates and organize targeted camps.
Mandatory Biometric Updates are required at age five and again at fifteen to ensure accuracy and reliability of Aadhaar data. With nearly 170 million Aadhaar numbers pending biometric updates, the campaign aims to prevent last-minute rushes and authentication issues that often arise during competitive exams and benefit disbursements.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar has written to Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories, urging them to support the initiative by facilitating school-based camps. The joint technology teams of UIDAI and the Department of School Education have enabled visibility of pending updates through the UDISE+ application, allowing schools to proactively manage the process.
Failure to update biometrics in a timely manner can lead to authentication difficulties for children seeking access to government schemes or registering for exams such as NEET, JEE, and CUET. The school-based approach is designed to streamline the process and reduce anxiety for students and parents.
UDISE+ is an educational management information system that captures key statistics related to school education. By integrating Aadhaar biometric update data into this platform, the initiative ensures seamless coordination between education and identity systems.
The campaign reflects a strategic convergence of digital governance and educational infrastructure, aiming to safeguard the rights and entitlements of millions of children across India.
