President of India Droupadi Murmu addressed the 45th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, emphasizing the institution’s historic legacy and its evolving role in shaping the future of the nation. Speaking at the event, she highlighted that IIT Dhanbad, established nearly a century ago to produce experts in mining and geology, has transformed into a leading centre for higher education and research across diverse fields. She praised the institute for aligning its academic and innovation goals with the needs and aspirations of the people.
The President stated that IIT Dhanbad plays a crucial role in national development, not only by preparing skilled engineers and researchers but also by nurturing professionals who are compassionate, sensitive, and purposeful. She noted that institutions like IIT Dhanbad are instrumental in guiding bright young minds and promoting cutting-edge research and innovation, which are essential for shaping the future of the country.
Addressing the challenges facing India and the world, including climate change, resource scarcity, digital disruption, and social inequality, the President said that the guidance and leadership of institutions like IIT Dhanbad are more important than ever. She called upon the institute to take a leading role in developing sustainable and innovative solutions to these complex problems.
The President emphasized that India’s greatest strength lies in its vast human resources. She noted that the increasing access to technical education and the spread of digital skills are propelling India toward becoming a global technological superpower. She stressed the importance of making India’s education system more practical, innovation-focused, and industry-friendly to channel the talent of the youth in the right direction and enable them to compete globally.
She also highlighted the need to foster a culture of patents alongside promoting research and development and start-ups. To encourage holistic thinking and creative problem-solving, she advocated for an interdisciplinary approach in education. The President urged students to use their knowledge not just for personal advancement but for the public good, contributing to a stronger and more equitable India.
She called on graduates to build a Green India, where development occurs in harmony with nature rather than at its expense.
