India and Shell Launch EV Training Program to Equip Youth with Green Skills

0

India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has partnered with Shell India to roll out a nationwide Green Skills and Electric Vehicle (EV) training program, aimed at empowering students and faculty with industry-ready expertise in green energy and e-mobility. The initiative, implemented by the Edunet Foundation, will establish EV skill labs in select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) across Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

The program features a multi-tier training model, including a 240-hour advanced EV Technician course at four NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module for ITIs without labs. The co-developed curriculum, designed by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and the Directorate General of Training (DGT), covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols. Over 250 instructors will undergo specialized Training of Trainers (ToT), ensuring high-quality skill dissemination.

Beyond classroom learning, the initiative offers placement support and co-branded certifications from Shell and DGT, equipping participants for careers in the fast-expanding green mobility sector. Specialized EV labs within ITIs and NSTIs will facilitate hands-on training, ensuring students gain practical experience aligned with industry standards.

The collaboration aligns with India’s net-zero goals, complementing national initiatives such as FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) and various state-level EV policies. As the apex vocational training body, DGT will mobilize students, trainers, and institutional resources, ensuring smooth implementation of this skilling effort.

Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary hailed the partnership as a transformative step toward linking sustainability with skill development, emphasizing that green mobility and renewable energy represent a generational opportunity for India. Trishaljit Sethi, Director General of Training, reiterated that integrating EV technologies into vocational training strengthens youth employability and real-world expertise.

Shell India’s Mansi Madan Tripathy underscored that equipping youth with green energy skills supports a low-carbon future, reflecting Shell’s commitment to India’s climate ambitions.

This DGT-Shell India collaboration is expected to pave the way for a robust, skilled workforce, accelerating India’s transition to a sustainable and innovation-driven economy.
