Mumbai: In a significant push for Mumbai’s suburban rail network, the Ministry of Railways has earmarked ₹1,777 crore for the Mumbai Urban Transport Projects (MUTP) in the Union Budget for 2025-26. This represents a remarkable 125% increase from the previous year’s allocation of ₹789 crore, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to improving suburban rail services across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The Government of Maharashtra will match the central allocation, effectively doubling the investment and enabling faster execution of key MUTP initiatives. These include decongesting existing lines, expanding connectivity, and enhancing commuter convenience.
Despite the ambitious scale of ongoing developments, funding was not a limiting factor during the 2024-25 financial year. The projects progressed smoothly, with additional funds made available through revised estimates in the final quarter as needed.
“With this solid financial support, vital MUTP projects — including new railway corridors, station modernisation, and infrastructure upgrades — are advancing steadily, moving Mumbai closer to a faster, safer, and more efficient suburban rail system,” said Shri Vilas Wadekar, CMD of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC).
