MRVC Marks 27th Annual Day, Showcases Major Milestones in Mumbai’s Rail Infrastructure.
The celebration was attended by former Chairmen & Managing Directors, Managing Directors and Directors, along with serving officers and staff. During the event, 37 employees were felicitated for meritorious service during 2025–26, while the prestigious Rolling Shield was jointly awarded to two project units for their exemplary execution of key infrastructure projects.
The programme began with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony led by MRVC Chairman & Managing Director Shri Vilas Wadekar, along with Director (Technical) Shri Manish Pradhan, Director (Finance) Shri Abhishek Swamy, Director (Projects) Shri H.S. Chaturvedi, Chief Vigilance Officer Shri Avinash Tarhawadkar and other dignitaries. Former CMDs, MDs and Directors were also felicitated for their invaluable contribution to MRVC’s growth.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Wadekar said MRVC has, for over two decades, played a pivotal role in transforming Mumbai’s suburban railway infrastructure with the support of the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra.
Highlighting the corporation’s achievements during 2025–26, he said Khar Road became the first railway station to be fully upgraded under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-IIIA, offering enhanced accessibility, commuter convenience and improved passenger experience. Similar upgrades were also completed at Mira Road, Kandivali, Neral and Kasara stations.
He added that construction of the Panvel-Karjat suburban rail corridor gained significant momentum during the year, bringing the much-awaited project closer to completion and boosting regional connectivity.
One of the notable accomplishments was the completion of critical infrastructure works at Virar station within nearly three months to facilitate 15-car EMU services on the Virar-Dahanu Road section. The works included platform widening and extension, construction of a new home platform and extension of the existing foot overbridge.
Shri Wadekar also highlighted the successful construction of India’s first waterproof pedestrian subway beneath seven operational railway tracks at Bhiwandi. Built without disrupting train operations, the subway has significantly improved pedestrian safety by reducing trespassing and proved its effectiveness during the recent heavy rains by remaining free from waterlogging and leakage.
Looking ahead, he announced that two major projects under MUTP-3B—the Badlapur-Karjat 3rd and 4th railway lines and the Asangaon-Kasara 4th railway line—have received approval, paving the way for further expansion of Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
MRVC has also floated a tender for the procurement of 238 air-conditioned EMU rakes, with bid opening scheduled for August 2026, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and meeting future travel demand.
Shri Wadekar credited the year’s achievements to the dedication of MRVC employees and the continued support of the Ministry of Railways, Government of Maharashtra, consultants, contractors, media and other stakeholders. He urged employees to maintain their focus on the timely completion of ongoing projects and reaffirmed MRVC’s commitment to developing a safer, sustainable and future-ready suburban railway network under the theme, “Building Capacity. Enhancing Safety. Connecting Futures.”
As part of the celebrations, the Rolling Shield was jointly presented to the project teams responsible for the successful execution of the Bhiwandi all-weather subway and the Virar station infrastructure upgrade.
The event concluded with a cultural programme presented by MRVC employees. The welcome address was delivered by Shri Vinod Mehra, General Manager (Electrical), while Shri Sunil G. Udasi, OSD-cum-Chief Manager (Corporate Coordination) proposed the vote of thanks.
