MRVC Completes Waterproof Subway Near Bhiwandi Road Station to Enhance Rail Safety

Mumbai: Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has successfully completed and commissioned a modern waterproof pedestrian subway near Bhiwandi Road Station on the Panvel–Vasai Road section of Central Railway, addressing a location that had witnessed frequent incidents of railway track trespassing.

The newly operational subway has been developed as part of MRVC’s ongoing efforts to improve passenger safety and eliminate unsafe crossing practices. The 68-metre-long underground structure has been constructed beneath seven active railway lines using advanced engineering techniques while ensuring uninterrupted train operations throughout the execution phase.

Designed to accommodate both pedestrians and two-wheelers, the subway offers a safe and convenient all-weather crossing facility for local residents. The infrastructure has been engineered to withstand heavy freight movement, including operations on the Dedicated Freight Corridor, ensuring long-term durability and reliability.

One of the project’s notable engineering achievements was the installation of four massive precast reinforced concrete segments using a sophisticated hydraulic air-pushing technique. The complex construction was carried out beneath operational railway tracks without affecting rail services.

To ensure protection against water seepage and flooding during monsoon conditions, the subway incorporates advanced waterproofing technologies, including EPDM rubber gaskets, HDPE membranes, FPO joint tapes and specialised sealing systems. These features are expected to provide long-term resistance against water ingress and enhance the lifespan of the structure.

The facility has also been equipped with covered approach roads, dedicated pedestrian pathways, decorative wall finishes, efficient drainage systems, proper ventilation and adequate lighting, creating a safe and comfortable experience for users throughout the year.

The completion of the project marks another milestone in MRVC’s commitment to modernising railway infrastructure and improving safety standards across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By providing a secure alternative to track crossing, the subway is expected to significantly reduce trespassing incidents and contribute to safer railway operations.

As railway authorities continue to focus on passenger safety and infrastructure enhancement, projects such as the Bhiwandi Road subway demonstrate how innovative engineering solutions can address longstanding challenges while improving the quality of life for local communities.
