Mumbai: As the southwest monsoon gains momentum, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stepped up its preparedness efforts to tackle flooding, waterlogging and other monsoon-related challenges across Mumbai. Civic authorities have undertaken extensive pre-monsoon measures aimed at ensuring smoother traffic movement, public safety and uninterrupted essential services during the rainy season.

The BMC has deployed a large network of dewatering pumps, strengthened pumping station operations and completed extensive desilting work across major and minor drains. Advanced monitoring systems have also been integrated to enable quicker responses to waterlogging incidents.
A key component of the city’s flood mitigation strategy is the operation of multiple pumping stations across Mumbai. These facilities are expected to play a critical role in preventing water accumulation in low-lying areas such as Hindmata, Sion, Kurla, Milan Subway and Andheri Subway, which have historically experienced severe flooding during heavy rainfall.
Desilting of drains and waterways remains a major focus area. Civic officials have reported significant progress in drain-cleaning activities to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding. Continuous monitoring of storm-water drains and vulnerable locations is also being carried out.
The BMC has additionally strengthened its disaster management framework with round-the-clock control rooms, emergency response teams, rainfall monitoring systems and coordinated action plans involving multiple government agencies. Special attention has been given to landslide-prone zones, tree-trimming activities and inspections of public infrastructure.
Authorities have also reviewed the readiness of hospitals, emergency shelters and rescue teams to ensure swift action in the event of heavy rains or weather-related emergencies. Coordination among civic departments, police, fire brigade and disaster management units has been enhanced to facilitate faster response times.
Challenges Remain
Despite extensive preparations, Mumbai continues to face challenges due to rapid urbanisation, ageing drainage infrastructure and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. High-intensity rainfall combined with high tides can still create difficult situations in certain parts of the city.
Experts believe that while operational preparedness has improved significantly over the years, long-term investments in drainage modernisation, sustainable urban planning and climate-resilient infrastructure will be essential for reducing monsoon-related disruptions.
