Dr. Gopal Ji Trivedi: The Scientist Who Gave Bihar’s Litchi Orchards A Second Life

When Bihar’s ageing litchi orchards began losing productivity, many believed it marked the decline of a proud agricultural legacy. But for Dr. Gopal Ji Trivedi, it was an opportunity to restore hope through science and innovation.

Dr. Gopal Ji Trivedi: The Scientist Who Gave Bihar’s Litchi Orchards A Second Life.

Born into a farming family in Muzaffarpur, Dr. Trivedi faced hardships early in life after losing his father while studying in Class 10. Despite financial struggles, encouragement from his mother and teachers helped him continue his education. He later secured admission and scholarship support at Pusa Agricultural University, beginning a remarkable journey in agricultural science.

Over the decades, Dr. Trivedi emerged as one of Bihar’s most respected agricultural scientists, known for combining scientific knowledge with grassroots farming realities.

In 2003, he introduced the pioneering “Rejuvenation Canopy Management” technique for ageing litchi orchards. Through scientific pruning, canopy restructuring, and improved orchard care, old trees regained productivity and healthier fruit yield. The innovation played a crucial role in reviving Muzaffarpur’s identity as India’s litchi capital and brought renewed income to thousands of farmers.

His work extended far beyond litchi cultivation. In Bihar’s flood-prone and waterlogged regions, he promoted sustainable farming models involving makhana, water chestnut cultivation, fisheries, winter maize, and integrated farming systems. Areas once considered agriculturally unviable gradually transformed into productive economic zones.

One of his most impactful initiatives was the BABA Project, which focused on converting barren waterlogged lands into fish-based integrated farming ecosystems. The project generated rural employment, improved groundwater conditions, and created long-term livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Even after retirement, Dr. Trivedi remained deeply connected to farmers, regularly visiting villages, guiding cultivators, and promoting scientific farming practices at the grassroots level.

Dr. Gopal Ji Trivedi passed away at the age of 96 in May 2026, leaving behind a legacy rooted in resilience, innovation, and service to Indian agriculture. In recognition of his lifelong contribution, India will honour him posthumously with the Padma Shri.

His life remains a powerful reminder that true nation-building often begins quietly — in fields, villages, and among the farmers who feed the country. www.forevernews.in
