Abuse of power by law enforcement will not be tolerated – Nine Policemen Awarded Death Sentence in Custodial Death Case
In a significant and hard-hitting verdict, a court in Tamil Nadu has sentenced nine police personnel to death in a custodial death case that had sparked nationwide outrage. The judgment is being seen as one of the strongest actions taken against police brutality in India.
The case dates back to June 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, when a father and son were taken into custody in the town of Sathankulam for allegedly violating lockdown rules by keeping their shop open beyond permitted hours. What followed was a shocking incident of custodial violence. Both were reportedly subjected to severe torture while in police custody and later died from their injuries.

The incident triggered protests across the country, with widespread calls for justice and accountability. The matter was eventually handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which conducted a detailed probe and filed charges against the police personnel involved.
After a prolonged trial, the court found all nine accused guilty of murder. In its observation, the court noted that the actions of the policemen were not just excessive use of force, but a clear case of inhuman and deliberate torture. It termed the crime as falling under the “rarest of rare” category, which justified the awarding of the death penalty.
The court also directed the convicted policemen to pay compensation to the victims’ family, acknowledging the immense loss and suffering caused by the incident.
This verdict has once again brought the issue of custodial violence into sharp focus. While such cases are not uncommon, convictions — especially of this magnitude — are rare. Legal experts believe the judgment sends a strong message that abuse of power by law enforcement will not be tolerated.
At the same time, the case is expected to move to higher courts, as death penalty convictions in India are subject to appeal and further judicial review.
The ruling marks a crucial moment in the ongoing debate around police reforms and accountability in India, highlighting the urgent need to ensure that law enforcement operates within the bounds of law and human rights.
