0

INS Ikshak, the third vessel in the Survey Vessel Large (SVL) class, was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy at Naval Base Kochi in a ceremonial event that underscored India’s growing maritime strength and commitment to indigenous shipbuilding. The ceremony was led by Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, and attended by senior naval officers, veterans, dignitaries, and representatives from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
The event began with a 50-men Guard of Honour presented to the Chief of the Naval Staff. Captain Tribhuvan Singh, Commanding Officer of INS Ikshak, read the Commissioning Warrant, followed by the hoisting of the naval ensign and the national anthem. The ship’s commissioning pennant was raised, marking its induction into active service, and the Commissioning Plaque was unveiled.
INS Ikshak represents a significant leap in India’s hydrographic and oceanographic capabilities. Designed with state-of-the-art systems and helicopter support, the vessel offers dual-role functionality—serving both as a survey platform and as a hospital ship or humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) vessel when needed. It is the first SVL to feature dedicated accommodations for women, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to inclusivity and modernization.
The ship’s induction is a milestone in the Navy’s collaboration with Indian industries and MSMEs, aligning with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. It enhances India’s ability to chart uncharted waters, improve maritime safety, and secure strategic sea lanes. Following the ceremony, the Chief of the Naval Staff toured the vessel, reviewed its construction journey, and interacted with the commissioning crew and GRSE officials, commending their professionalism and contributions to the successful induction of INS Ikshak.
