Mumbai: The Parcel Directorate, Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to promote sustainable packaging practices and strengthen efficiency in postal services.
The MoU was signed at the Office of the Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, Mumbai, by Dr. Sudhir Jakhere, IPoS, Assistant Postmaster General (Business Development & Marketing), Maharashtra Circle, and Dr. Babu Rao Guduri, Additional Director, IIP, Mumbai, in the presence of Manoj Kumar, Director Postal Services (Mails & Business Development), Maharashtra Circle.

Key Areas of Collaboration
The agreement outlines joint initiatives to design and implement innovative packaging solutions, with a strong emphasis on sustainability:

Sustainable Packaging Materials: Development of eco-friendly, durable, lightweight, shockproof, and cost-efficient alternatives to current materials such as corrugated boxes and cloth wraps. Special focus on airworthy packaging for liquids and sensitive items.

Benchmarking & Assessment: Evaluation of India Post’s packaging and logistics practices against global standards to enhance competitiveness.

Pricing & Technical Standards: Preparation of a pricing framework for sustainable materials, benchmarking against conventional packaging, and defining size, shape, and design standards with robust quality control mechanisms for nationwide scalability.

Capacity Building: Creation of video-based training modules to educate postal staff on adopting sustainable packaging practices.
With IIP’s five decades of expertise in packaging technology and DoP’s unmatched outreach of more than 1.65 lakh post offices across India, this collaboration will establish a comprehensive framework for packaging innovation. It also aligns with the Government of India’s commitment to environmental sustainability, while improving the safety, reliability, and customer experience of postal services.
