India Set to Expand Food Exports to Philippines as Basmati Restrictions Lifted

0

India is poised to significantly increase its food exports to the Philippines following the Southeast Asian nation’s decision to liberalize imports of key agricultural products. A delegation of Indian rice exporters will visit the Philippines next month to advance trade opportunities, particularly in high-quality Basmati rice, which will now be exported without previous restrictions.

The breakthrough follows a high-level visit to India by Secretary of Agriculture Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., who led discussions with officials from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority and the Indian Rice Exporters Federation. The Philippines has committed to prioritizing imports of Indian rice, buffalo meat, vegetables, fruits, and peanuts, aiming to diversify its supply base amid global trade uncertainties.

The move reflects a strategic shift in Indo-Philippine relations, with both countries seeking deeper cooperation in agriculture, trade, and economic growth. The Philippines is working to reduce dependence on Chinese products and enhance food security through stronger ties with India.

India exported agricultural products worth USD 413 million to the Philippines in 2024, accounting for just 2 percent of the Philippines’ total agricultural imports. The new agreement is expected to substantially increase this figure and improve income for Indian farmers.

To further strengthen bilateral engagement, a delegation of Philippine food importers will participate in World Food India from September 25 to 28 and the International Rice Conference on October 30 and 31. These events are expected to catalyze new partnerships and boost India’s agricultural export footprint in Southeast Asia.
