Hollywood’s Misleading Heart Attack Tropes Could Delay Life-Saving Care, Say US Researchers

Medical researchers have criticised Hollywood portrayals of heart attacks, warning that the dramatic depictions—such as sudden collapse and exaggerated chest clutching—are misleading and could cause dangerous delays in seeking care. Nursing professor Ann Eckhardt from the University of Texas at Arlington said that most real-life heart attacks don’t mirror what’s shown on screen and that many patients experience milder or less defined symptoms.

“It’s not always intense,” Eckhardt noted in an article published in Heart & Lung. “Sometimes it’s just discomfort that doesn’t feel quite right.”

The research team has been exploring how public perception of chest pain contributes to misdiagnosis or delayed treatment. Nearly 75 percent of people surveyed had learned about heart attacks from movies or TV, resulting in an unrealistic picture of symptoms and risk patterns. The study also highlights how clinical language—previously describing women’s heart attack symptoms as “atypical”—has confused messaging. Eckhardt stressed that chest-related discomfort remains the most common symptom in both men and women, and nuanced descriptions are urgently needed.

To close this awareness gap, the team developed a “Chest Pain Conception Questionnaire” aimed at redefining public understanding. Many people associate heart attacks with stabbing pain, but the reality often involves vague pressure, tightness or unease.

By correcting the myth of the Hollywood heart attack, the researchers hope to help both the public and medical professionals ask smarter questions—and save lives.
